I was sure that I looked just as stunned as the woman across from me. Jace drew his own gun, aiming it at the man. I wondered if he recalled that he hadnât yet loaded it.
The manâs voice broke the heavy silence, âPut it down,â he demanded, his gun still aimed for Jaceâs head.
Jace slowly lowered his gun to his side, âIâm an officer from Jasper City. We were only looking for a place to stay for the night,â he continued, his voice steady and calm. âWhy donât you put your gun down and we can talk about this?â He returned his gun to its holster and moved his hands away from it.
In the corner the woman had yet to move, still obviously startled by our presence. The man looked back to her, and then immediately back to Jace. He lowered the shotgun, but refused to let it leave his hands. âWhy donât you just have a seat over there,â he indicated to a spot on the floor with the barrel of his gun. We took a few steps and followed his orders. I sat immediately, but Jace once again was slow to comply.
When we were finally both sitting, the man walked over to us and reached for the gun still strapped to Jaceâs side. When Jace stopped him, the man let out a short laugh, âFine, Iâll let you hang on to that,â he said, his words filled with an odd sense of humor.
He gestured to the woman I assumed to be his wife. âLucy, come over here and go through their bags,â his voice was soft as he spoke to her, but there was still an underlying tone of irritation.
She rose to her feet. Her white dress fell from its previously ruffled state until it delicately surrounded her small frame. At first glance she hadnât looked so petite, but now as she stood I was able to see how fragile she was.
Her skin was soft and pale, which made her thick dark hair seem out of place. She wasnât young, but didnât appear to be elderly either. I guessed that she was probably in her forties and the man in his fifties or sixties. With light steps she practically floated across the room to us. She lifted the bags one by one and searched through each, reporting in almost a whisper what she found. Her husband simply nodded.
âSounds like youâre saving up for the apocalypse,â he joked. I wondered if he knew what was going on outside, not even a mile from his door. He had to; there was no other reason to be so on guard.
When she was done searching through our things she returned to her place in the corner. As she sat, her dress flared up around her legs and then came to rest in a crumpled pile around her. Her husband watched her, and then gave her a short smile and a nod.
It seemed as though he had finally dismissed us as a threat. He offered his hand to me, to help me to my feet.
